Printed Sky Stretch Ceiling for Medical Center in Abu Dhabi
PIONER GROUP completed a custom printed sky stretch ceiling for a medical facility in Abu Dhabi. The large-format backlit ceiling features a high-resolution blue sky and cloud image, creating the effect of an artificial skylight above the treatment area. The system combines uniform LED backlighting with a translucent printed membrane and was carefully integrated with the existing medical equipment and ceiling services.
The ceiling combines a high-resolution blue sky and cloud print with integrated backlighting. When illuminated, the entire surface becomes a large artificial skylight, transforming a conventional medical ceiling into a bright and visually open architectural feature.
This type of ceiling is particularly suitable for healthcare environments where patients may spend significant time looking upward during examinations or procedures.
The main objective of the project was to create the impression of natural daylight despite the room having no conventional skylight.
Instead of using standard ceiling lights, a large illuminated stretch ceiling occupies a significant portion of the ceiling area.
The printed membrane depicts a vivid blue sky with white clouds. Light installed behind the translucent printed material passes through the surface, making the image appear illuminated from within.
The result is similar to looking through a large roof opening toward the sky.
Printed luminous ceilings are increasingly used in healthcare interiors, including diagnostic and imaging environments, because they combine illumination with nature-inspired visual design.
One of the key advantages of stretch ceiling technology is the ability to manufacture large illuminated surfaces with minimal visible structural elements.
For this Abu Dhabi project, the sky image extends across a large rectangular ceiling feature, providing a much stronger visual effect than conventional individual light panels.
The system consists of several main components:
* high-resolution printed translucent stretch membrane;
* perimeter aluminium mounting profiles;
* LED backlighting installed above the membrane;
* supporting ceiling structure;
* electrical drivers and control equipment.
The translucent membrane works simultaneously as the decorative surface and as a diffuser for the lighting system.
This produces a much softer and more homogeneous appearance than exposed LED fixtures.
Medical and diagnostic rooms have very different requirements from conventional residential interiors.
Patients may spend considerable time lying down and looking directly at the ceiling. A conventional white ceiling with technical equipment can make the environment feel highly clinical.
A printed sky ceiling changes what the patient sees.
Instead of a blank surface, the ceiling becomes a large visual scene featuring sky, clouds, nature or another custom image.
Nature-inspired printed ceilings are already used in healthcare projects, including scan rooms and other patient-facing areas, specifically to create a more welcoming visual environment.
Integration Around Medical Equipment
One of the most important aspects visible in this project is the integration of the ceiling with the existing medical equipment.
The room contains large diagnostic equipment together with a ceiling-mounted equipment support system.
The stretch ceiling therefore had to be designed around the technical infrastructure rather than treated as an independent decorative element.
The ceiling layout allows the medical equipment to remain fully operational while maintaining a clean architectural appearance around it.
This requires accurate coordination between:
* ceiling dimensions;
* mounting profiles;
* lighting equipment;
* electrical services;
* HVAC components;
* access requirements;
* medical equipment and ceiling-mounted systems.
For healthcare projects, this coordination should be considered during the technical design stage before fabrication begins.
A printed sky ceiling works best when the illumination behind the membrane is uniform.
LED modules or LED strips are distributed above the stretch membrane so that the light overlaps across the entire surface.
The spacing between LEDs, distance from the membrane and output of the lighting system are calculated according to the dimensions and depth of the light box.
The objective is to avoid visible bright spots, dark areas and shadows.
When properly designed, the membrane diffuses the LED light and creates one continuous illuminated surface.
This is what gives the ceiling its realistic artificial skylight appearance.
Custom Printed Ceiling Designs
Although blue sky and clouds were selected for this Abu Dhabi project, printed stretch ceilings can be manufactured using almost any suitable high-resolution image.
Popular options for healthcare interiors include:
Blue sky and clouds
Creates the classic artificial skylight appearance.
Trees and forests
Suitable for wellness areas, clinics and treatment rooms.
Leaves and natural landscapes
Creates a softer biophilic design concept.
Abstract graphics
Can complement the interior design or corporate identity.
Custom artwork
Hospitals, clinics and designers can provide their own image for printing.
High-resolution UV printing allows imagery to be applied directly to stretch ceiling membranes, including skies, nature scenes, artwork and custom graphics.
Printed Ceiling vs Standard Light Ceiling
A standard translucent light ceiling provides homogeneous white illumination.
A printed ceiling adds another architectural layer.
Instead of simply becoming a large luminaire, the ceiling becomes a visual feature.
For this project, the combination of a blue sky image and backlighting creates considerably more depth than a conventional white luminous ceiling.
Depending on the project requirements, PIONER GROUP can create:
plain translucent light ceilings, printed light ceilings, artificial skylights, custom graphic ceilings, RGB/RGBW illuminated ceilings and bespoke ceiling features.
Suitable Applications
Printed sky ceilings are particularly suitable for spaces where people frequently look upward or where access to natural daylight is limited.
Typical applications include:
* hospitals;
* MRI and CT rooms;
* diagnostic centers;
* dental clinics;
* treatment rooms;
* examination rooms;
* rehabilitation centers;
* wellness facilities;
* clinics;
* waiting areas;
* pediatric facilities.
The same technology can also be used in residential and hospitality projects, including bathrooms, bedrooms, spas, corridors and windowless rooms.
Custom Shapes and Sizes
A sky ceiling does not have to be rectangular.
Stretch ceiling technology allows the illuminated feature to be manufactured in many architectural forms, including:
rectangular ceilings, squares, circles, ovals, curved shapes and large custom geometries.
The dimensions are determined individually according to the room and architectural drawings.
Large-format installations can also be divided into multiple sections where required by the structure, membrane dimensions or technical equipment.
Why Use a Stretch Ceiling for an Artificial Skylight?
Compared with conventional illuminated panels, stretch ceiling systems offer considerable design flexibility.
A single system can combine a large illuminated surface, custom printing, lightweight construction and bespoke geometry.
The membrane also conceals the LED installation above it, leaving only the illuminated image visible from below.
This makes the system suitable for modern interiors where designers want the lighting itself to become part of the architecture rather than installing multiple visible fixtures.
PIONER GROUP provides design, supply and installation of stretch ceiling systems in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE.
For technically complex projects, we can work from architectural drawings and coordinate the stretch ceiling with lighting, HVAC, sprinklers, detectors, access panels and other ceiling services.
Printed ceilings can be produced according to the exact dimensions of the project and supplied with a complete lighting system.
For healthcare environments, the ceiling design can also be developed around existing medical equipment and technical restrictions.
