Printed Sky Ceiling at Yas Mall, Abu Dhabi
Custom printed sky stretch ceiling installed at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi. The LED-backlit blue sky and cloud design was integrated between decorative wood-effect beams, creating the appearance of a large artificial skylight above the restaurant seating area.
PIONER GROUP completed a custom printed sky ceiling installation at Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi, creating a large illuminated artificial skylight above a restaurant seating area.
The concept was developed to bring the visual feeling of natural daylight and open sky into an enclosed commercial interior. A high-resolution image of a blue sky with white clouds was printed onto a translucent stretch ceiling membrane and illuminated from behind using LED lighting.
Rather than creating one uninterrupted luminous surface, the printed sky ceiling was integrated between decorative wood-effect beams. This creates the impression of looking through a glazed pergola or roof structure towards the open sky.
Combined with greenery, flowers and natural finishes throughout the restaurant, the ceiling became an important architectural feature that helps create the atmosphere of an outdoor garden terrace inside Yas Mall.
Project Details
Location: Yas Mall, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Project type: Restaurant / hospitality interior
Ceiling type: Printed stretch ceiling
Design: Blue sky and white clouds
Lighting: Integrated LED backlighting
Installation: Integrated between decorative wood-effect beams
Visual effect: Artificial skylight / daylight ceiling
Application: Commercial interior
The main design objective was to create the visual impression that natural daylight was entering the restaurant through a large glazed roof.
For commercial interiors located inside shopping malls, introducing a real skylight may not be possible because there is no direct access to the exterior roof.
An artificial skylight ceiling provides a completely different solution.
The visual effect is created using three main components:
* a translucent stretch ceiling membrane;
* a high-resolution sky and cloud print;
* LED backlighting installed behind the membrane.
When illuminated, the printed surface becomes luminous and creates visual depth.
Instead of looking like a conventional ceiling panel, it begins to resemble an opening towards the sky.
The visible surface of the installation is a translucent stretch ceiling membrane printed with a detailed image of a blue sky and soft white clouds.
The membrane performs two functions simultaneously.
First, it provides the decorative printed image.
Second, it acts as a diffuser for the LED lighting installed behind the ceiling.
When the LEDs are switched on, light passes through the translucent material and illuminates the printed image from behind.
The clouds and different blue tones create variations in the visual appearance of the surface, giving the ceiling significantly more depth than a conventional white light ceiling.
Backlighting is one of the most important technical elements of an artificial sky ceiling.
LED lighting is installed behind the stretch membrane and distributed across the ceiling area.
The distance between the LEDs and membrane, LED spacing and output must be selected carefully.
The objective is to avoid:
* visible LED dots;
* bright spots;
* dark areas;
* shadows;
* uneven illumination.
When properly designed, individual LED sources disappear from view and the entire printed surface appears to glow uniformly.
This is what creates the characteristic artificial daylight effect.
Integration with Decorative Wood-Effect Beams
One of the strongest architectural elements of this Yas Mall project is the way the illuminated ceiling was incorporated into the decorative beam structure.
Instead of creating one large rectangular light ceiling, the sky appears through multiple sections between the beams.
This makes the structure resemble a pergola or glazed conservatory roof.
From different positions within the restaurant, visitors see different sections of blue sky and clouds framed by the wood-effect structure.
The result is more architectural than simply installing conventional illuminated ceiling panels.
The artificial skylight becomes part of the interior itself.
Creating an Outdoor Atmosphere Inside Yas Mall
The surrounding interior plays an important role in the overall effect.
The restaurant incorporates:
* decorative greenery;
* plants;
* floral arrangements;
* wood-effect finishes;
* natural textures;
* warm decorative lighting.
The blue sky ceiling complements these elements and helps create the visual impression of an outdoor garden environment.
Although the restaurant is located inside a shopping mall, the combination of sky, greenery, flowers and timber-style architectural elements makes the seating area feel more connected with nature.
Biophilic Ceiling Design
This project is also a good example of how an artificial sky ceiling can support a biophilic interior design concept.
Biophilic interiors incorporate visual references to nature into indoor environments.
In this project, several elements work together:
Sky – creates visual openness.
Clouds – introduce natural variation and depth.
Greenery – connects the interior with vegetation.
Flowers – reinforce the garden atmosphere.
Wood-effect beams – create the appearance of a natural architectural structure.
Illumination – gives the ceiling the brightness associated with daylight.
Rather than being an isolated decorative feature, the ceiling becomes part of the overall interior concept.
Why Use a Printed Sky Ceiling in a Restaurant?
Restaurants and cafés rely heavily on atmosphere and visual identity.
The ceiling represents a large surface that can be transformed into an architectural feature rather than remaining a purely technical element.
A printed sky ceiling provides several advantages.
Creates a Strong Focal Point
A large illuminated ceiling immediately attracts attention and can become one of the most recognizable elements of the interior.
Makes the Interior Feel Brighter
Large luminous surfaces can visually brighten enclosed areas that have limited access to daylight.
Creates Visual Depth
Sky and cloud imagery introduces perspective, making the ceiling appear visually more distant.
Supports an Outdoor Design Concept
When combined with plants, flowers and natural finishes, a sky ceiling can help recreate the atmosphere of an outdoor terrace.
Provides Custom Design Freedom
The image, shape, dimensions and lighting characteristics can all be adapted to the architectural concept.
Printed Sky Ceiling vs Standard Light Ceiling
A standard translucent light ceiling produces a clean, homogeneous luminous surface.
A printed light ceiling adds a decorative image to the same basic concept.
This allows the ceiling to provide:
architectural lighting + decorative design
within a single system.
For a minimalist office or commercial interior, a plain white translucent ceiling may be the better solution.
For restaurants, hotels, retail spaces and hospitality projects where atmosphere and visual identity are particularly important, a printed ceiling can provide much greater design impact.
Artificial Skylight Without Natural Daylight
One of the biggest advantages of an artificial skylight is that it does not require an actual opening through the building roof.
The skylight effect is produced entirely inside the building using:
printed translucent membrane + LED backlighting + architectural framing.
This makes the solution particularly useful for:
* shopping malls;
* basement interiors;
* corridors;
* internal restaurant spaces;
* rooms without windows;
* commercial areas far from exterior façades.
The artificial skylight can therefore be installed almost anywhere the ceiling structure allows.
Custom Printed Ceiling Designs
Blue sky and clouds are among the most popular designs, but the printed membrane can be customized for each project.
Possible designs include:
* blue sky and clouds;
* sunset skies;
* tropical landscapes;
* tree canopies;
* leaves;
* floral imagery;
* abstract artwork;
* geometric graphics;
* branded designs;
* corporate logos;
* custom photography.
For commercial interiors, artwork can be prepared specifically according to the dimensions and proportions of the ceiling.
Stretch ceiling technology provides considerable freedom in terms of geometry.
Printed and illuminated ceilings can be created as:
* rectangular ceilings;
* square ceiling panels;
* circles;
* ovals;
* curved features;
* irregular geometric forms;
* individual illuminated modules;
* large continuous ceilings;
* sections between architectural beams;
* suspended ceiling features.
This allows the ceiling system to follow the architecture rather than forcing the designer to use standard lighting modules.
Artificial Sky Ceiling for Restaurants and Cafés
Restaurants and cafés are particularly suitable for artificial sky ceilings because lighting and atmosphere are closely connected.
A sky ceiling can be installed:
* above the main seating area;
* above a dining table;
* over a café terrace area;
* above a bar;
* in an entrance zone;
* within a decorative pergola;
* inside a private dining area.
The design can range from a small decorative skylight to a large illuminated ceiling covering a substantial part of the restaurant.
Other Applications
The same technology can also be used in:
* hotels;
* shopping malls;
* retail stores;
* spas;
* wellness centres;
* clinics;
* hospitals;
* dental clinics;
* offices;
* reception areas;
* beauty salons;
* luxury villas;
* bedrooms;
* bathrooms;
* swimming pool areas;
* waiting rooms.
The concept can be adapted according to the function and visual style of each project.
Commercial Stretch Ceiling Installation in Abu Dhabi
Commercial ceiling projects require more technical coordination than a simple decorative installation.
The ceiling design may need to accommodate:
* HVAC systems;
* linear air grilles;
* sprinklers;
* smoke detectors;
* speakers;
* CCTV cameras;
* emergency lights;
* access panels;
* electrical services;
* architectural beams;
* decorative structures.
For this reason, architectural and MEP drawings should ideally be reviewed before fabrication.
Proper coordination allows the stretch ceiling, lighting and technical systems to work together without compromising the appearance of the finished interior.
Advantages of Printed Stretch Ceilings
Printed stretch ceiling systems provide several benefits for architectural interiors.
High-Resolution Custom Printing
The membrane can reproduce photography, graphics, patterns and custom artwork.
Integrated Backlighting
LED lighting can transform the printed surface into a large luminous architectural element.
Custom Dimensions
Each ceiling can be manufactured according to the dimensions of the project.
Lightweight Construction
Stretch membranes and aluminum profiles create relatively lightweight ceiling systems.
Architectural Flexibility
The system can be integrated into custom ceiling structures, niches, beams and ceiling features.
